Twin Beach Accidents in New Jersey Raise Safety Alarms — But Training Can Prevent the Worst

Certified lifeguard training centers across the U.S., such as the American Lifeguard Association's Lifeguard Class Program, Red Cross Aquatics Program, and Ellis & Associates, don’t just teach how to rescue others — they also instill deep knowledge about equipment management, situational awareness, and hazard prevention.

As the summer sun warms the New Jersey shoreline, what should be leisurely days at the beach turned tragic in two freak accidents that sent shockwaves through coastal communities.

Lifeguard Impaled in Asbury Park

On June 25, a young lifeguard in Asbury Park faced a horrific injury after being impaled by a beach umbrella pole. According to reports, strong winds lifted the umbrella off its stand while the 18-year-old tried to stabilize it. As she reached out to grab it, she fell, and the umbrella’s metal shaft penetrated under her arm and exited near her back.

Firefighters responded quickly, cutting down the metal to safely transport her to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Doctors say she narrowly avoided damage to major arteries and is expected to recover fully after several weeks of healing.

Belmar Swimmer Struck by Hidden Metal Rod

Just days later, on June 30, another incident occurred at Belmar Beach. A swimmer suffered serious injury after being impaled by a submerged metal rod near a jetty. Emergency teams acted fast, and the swimmer was hospitalized. Officials are still investigating how the dangerous debris ended up in the water.

Could These Accidents Have Been Prevented? The Role of Lifeguard Education Centers

While some beach dangers are unavoidable, many experts believe proper training significantly reduces injury risk.

For instance, trained lifeguards are taught how to anchor umbrellas with wind-resistant systems, how to inspect surroundings for dangerous debris, and how to position themselves to avoid injury. Had the Asbury Park lifeguard undergone advanced training through such an institution, many believe the risk might have been avoided.

In addition, regular safety audits — a common practice at well-trained facilities — help prevent tragic oversights like uninspected jetties or improperly stored equipment.

Staying Safe This Summer

As beach attendance surges across the East Coast, officials are urging beachgoers and lifeguards alike to stay alert. Whether it’s checking for submerged objects, securing umbrellas properly, or enrolling in professional lifeguard training, preparedness remains the most effective defense against summer tragedies.
